Common tracking questions

Tracking doubts, clarified

Start by asking what a signal actually supports. These answers separate a useful observation from a conclusion that needs more evidence.

Is a container number the same as a booking number?

No. A container number identifies equipment. A booking number refers to a transport arrangement that may involve several containers. Keep the association between the references rather than replacing one with the other. Read the identity guide for the main identifier types.

Does a valid check digit prove the container is genuine?

No. It checks the identifier's structure and can detect many transcription errors. It does not establish physical authenticity, contents or possession. A valid number still needs a reliable connection to the observed equipment and the transaction being discussed.

Is container tracking always real time?

No. Devices and operational systems report at different intervals, and updates can be delayed. Check the observation time as well as the receipt time. A recently refreshed webpage can still show an old observation. The events guide explains why those clocks matter.

Can I find a container using the vessel's position?

Only as a qualified inference when the container is confirmed aboard that vessel. A vessel position alone does not prove loading or continued presence aboard. A booking or planned connection can change, and AIS information concerns the vessel rather than individual containers.

Does a temperature alert mean the cargo is damaged?

No. An alert flags a rule applied to a measurement. Assess placement, duration, calibration and product requirements with the responsible quality team. Air temperature, equipment set point and product temperature are different values. The sensor guide provides a careful starting point.

Does a missing update mean the container is lost?

No. Coverage gaps, battery issues, delayed publication or data integration problems can interrupt visibility. Investigate with the responsible operator. Keep the last confirmed event separate from any estimate; a missing signal is not evidence that nothing moved, either.

Does discharged mean ready for collection?

No. Customs status, carrier release, terminal readiness and collection requirements may still need confirmation. Check the actual terminal's process and the relevant responsible parties before sending a driver. Our handoff guide explains the different system roles.

Are a terminal operating system and a port community system the same?

No. A terminal operating system supports terminal work. A port community system supports information exchange among separate organisations. Their roles can connect, but each service has its own scope, permissions and operational responsibilities.

Can this website track or release my container?

No. This is an independent educational website without access to operational tracking or release systems. Contact your carrier, forwarder or terminal for shipment-specific help. You can use our enquiry composer for questions about the concepts explained here, but it does not send messages or retrieve shipment records.
